In the poem She breaks stones, the poet says that on the foot path in Allahabad he saw someone breaking stones.
She was not sitting under a shady tree. She was young and dark, she had a heavy hammer in her hand with which she hit the stones again and again. In front of her was a huge tree, a skyscraper and other things which were in contrast to her situation.
It was summer time and the sun was high up in the sky. It was the hottest time of the day, a hot breeze was blowing, the earth was burning hot and there was dust all around.
It was afternoon and she was breaking stones.
When she saw that the poet was looking at her, she looked sorrowfully at the skyscraper and then looked at the poet, like a person who does not cry after being beaten. The poet could hear the pangs of pain, which he had never heard before. After a moment she trembled and a few drops of sweat rolled down her forehead. Once again she immersed herself in work, as if to say that, after all "I break stones".
