Solution :

Let the literature book = x
Maths book = y

Cost of textbook of maths is 2 rupees more than that of a literature book, y = x + 2 ......(1)

Cost of 5 literature books = 5x
38 rupees more than 3 books,
5x = 3y + 38 ......(2)

Equating (1) and (2) we get :

x + 2 = y × 3
5x - 38 = 3y
3x + 6 = 3y ......(3)

Equating (1) and (3) we get :

3x + 6 = 3y
5x - 36 = 3y
- + -
___________
-2x = -4
___________
x =  \frac{ - 44}{ - 2}

x = 22

Therefore, cost of each literature book is 22 rupees.
