She remains miserable in her middle class status and strives to appear wealthy and glamorous for a fancy party. She borrows jewels from her rich friend and wears a beautiful gown, but her happiness is fleeting when she loses the necklace and is forced to spend the rest of her life paying off the debt to replace it. On the other hand,O. Henry’s “The Gift of the Magi” is a story of James and Della Dillingham Young, a young couple who, despite their poverty, individually resolve to give each other an elegant gift on Christmas Eve. Della sells her beautiful long hair in order to buy a platinum fob chain for Jim's antique gold watch.
