(a) Refractive index:
- The refractive index defines the speed with which the light travels through the medium.
- This is a dimensionless number which is calculated with the light speed.
- The refractive index is the ratio of light speed and the light phase velocity.
- The refractive index is given by the formula below:
Where,
n = Refractive index
c = Speed of light
v = Phase velocity of light in that material
(b) Activity to draw a magnetic field line:
- Fix a white sheet in the drawing board.
- Place the bar magnet in the center of the board.
- Place the magnetic compass in the sheet which can be in either ends of the bar magnet. If it is placed towards South Pole of magnet then North Pole of compass is attracted whereas if it placed towards North Pole of magnet then South Pole of compass is attracted. Here, let us place the compass near North Pole of magnet which attracts South Pole of needle.
- The South Pole and North Pole of needle is marked with pencil.
- The position of compass is moved in such a way that south pole of needle is placed in the previous position of the north pole of needle.
- The step 4 and 5 is repeated until the surrounding of the entire magnet is marked.
- The marked points are connected with the curved line (the field line).
- Thus, this curved represents the magnetic field lines around the bar magnet.
