Total distance covered= 100n metres
Total distance covered by policeman =100+110+120+130+.....(n-1)terms
100n=(n-1)/2[200+(n-2)10]
n^2-3n-18=0
n=6,-3
Hence the policeman will catch the thie after 6 minutes
