Thermos flask consists of a double walled glass bottle encased in a protective plastic or metal outer case. The glass inner bottle is also mirror finished. Between the double walls of the glass bottle is a partial vacuum. It is designed to keep anything put into it, whether hot or cold, at the same temperature for a long period by restricting the amount of heat that can enter or leave the flask. Heat passes through things in three ways, conduction, convection and radiation. By having a vacuum between the bottle walls, it prevents conduction and convection taking place. The mirror finish limits radiation as silvered surfaces reflect heat as well as light.
