A thick wire is hanging from a wooden table. An anticlockwise magnetic field is to be produced around the wire by passing current through this wire by using a battery. Which terminal of the battery should be connected to the
(a) top end of wire?
(b) bottom end of wire?
Give reason for your choice.

(a)Negative terminal of the battery should be connected to the top end of wire  

(b)Positive terminal of the battery should be connected to the bottom end of wire.

Explanation:

It has been established in advance that thick wire hung on a wooden table must generate a magnetic field around the wire in an anti-clockwise direction when it is powered by a battery. To output this current, the positive pole of the battery must be connected to the lower pole, and the negative pole of the battery to the upper pole, because the current which flows from positive to negative.
