A thief is spotted by a policeman from a distance of 100 metres. When the policeman starts the chase, the thief also starts running. If the speed of the thief be 8 km/hr and that of the policeman 10 km/hr, how far the thief will have run before he is overtaken?

Heya
Let the distance the thief travelled before he's overtaken be 'x' km
Speed of the thief is 8kmph
Time=distance/speed = x/8 hours
The distance travelled by the police=0.1+x km
Speed of the police is 10kmph
Time = 0.1+x/10
Time taken by both police and the thief to cover thief respective distances is the same.
x/8 = 0.1+x/10
10x = 0.8+8x
2x = 0.8
x = 0.8/2 = 0.4km
That is 400 metres.
Hope it helped! ^_^
