Given : A thief started running from point X at a speed of 20 km/hr,

after running for 30 minutes, when he watched the police at the distance of 400 m coming from opposite direction at the speed of 30 km/hr,

he turned and started running at 25 km/hr in the same direction as of police.

To Find : After how much distance from point X police will catch the thief?

Solution:

From point X   at a speed of 20 km/hr,  for 30 minutes

Distance from X = 20 * (30/60) = 10 km

thief turned and started running at 25 km/hr

police man at speed of 30 km/hr

Relative speed = 5 km/hr

relative distance = 400 m  = 0.4 km

time =   0.4/5  hr  =  0.4 * 12 = 4.8 minutes

Distance covered in 4.8 minutes =  25 * 4.8/60  =  2 km

Hence Distance form point X = 10 - 2 =  8 km

distance from point X police will catch the thief = 8 km
