Given :- A thief stole a cycle and rides at 10 km/h . After 2(1/2) hours the police man chased him at 30 km/hr. At what distance he will catch him ?

Solution :-

→ Speed of thief = 10km/h

→ Time for which he alone rides = 2(1/2) = (5/2) hours.

so,

→ Distance cover by thief = Speed * Time = 10 * (5/2) = 25 km.

Now,

→ Speed of Police man = 30 km/h .

Since both are riding in same direction .

then,

→ Usual speed = Speed of Police man - Speed of thief = 30 - 10 = 20 km/h .

and,

→ Distance covered = Distance cover by thief = 25 km.

therefore,

→ Time taken by Policeman to chase thief = Distance / usual speed = 25 / 20 = (5/4) hours.

Hence,

→ Distance covered by Policeman before chasing thief = Speed * Time = 30 * (5/4) = 37.5 km. (Ans.)
