A third polaroid p3 is placed between p1 and p2 with pass axis of p3 making an angle β with that of p1. If i1, i2 and i3 represent the intensities of light transmitted by p1, p2 and p3, determine the values of angle θ and β for which i1 = i2 = i3

Answer:-

Intensity of light will be

I1 = I0 / 2 ... (1)

I2 = I0/2 cos^{2} \alpha .... (2)

I3 = I2 cos^{2} \beta ... (3)

Now, I1 = I2

Hence,

I0 / 2 = I0/2 cos^{2} \alpha

cos^{2} \alpha =1

\alpha = 0 degrees

Also, I2 = I3

So,

Similarly \beta = 0 degrees

Hope this answers the question.
