Explanation:

  • 'The Missing Dollar' is a simple short story written by Stephen P.H. Butler Leacock, a Canadian professor, political scientist and writer. It's an entertaining story full of humor and hidden irony. It's about how people forget the money they owe and act casually like they never owed it. The author's friend Todd, once had to take a cab while leaving for Bermuda. Not having any change, Todd borrowed it from the author.
  • Upon arrival in Hamilton, Bermuda Todd wrote an informal letter to the author. He also met him again on the railroad after his return to the author's hometown but neither in the letter nor in the second meeting did Todd mention the dollar he owed. Todd took it lightly and had completely forgotten he had to return the dollar. He also later talks about various things besides his dollar loan payment.
  • In the second half the author speaks completely opposite. He realizes that the author like Todd, may have forgotten to pay back his small amount. This embarrasses him and hurts him as he realizes that he had formed a wrong picture of Todd in his head and that it was only Todd's modest mistake that he forgot to return the dollar. The author then tries to remember and make a list of all the people he might owe and wants those people to talk so the author can remember and pay. So the author becomes very conscientious because he doesn't want any of his readers to leave his work somewhere for Todd to read.
