‘A thousand men can make a camp. But it takes a woman to make a home.’ How is this idea brought out by Priestley in his play 'Mother's Day'? (NCERT Class 11) (Mother's Day by J B Priestley)
Answers
Undoubtedly, woman makes a home complete. I would rather say mothers make homes complete. Rudyard Kipling says: 'God could not be everywhere, so he created mothers.'
This idea is beautifully brought out by Priestley in his play 'Mother's Day'. Mrs. Pearson is a very dedicated housewife, mother, and wife. She works extremely hard to keep everyone happy in the family, yet she is treated disrespectfully by her family members.
She is ignored and made to work throughout the day. In spite of their ill treatment, neglect and exploitation, she loves them all. In fact, for that she endures everything without any murmur or protest.
It is she who keeps her entire family bound together. It proves ‘A thousand men can make a camp. But it takes a woman to make a home.’
