A town population increased by 1200 and then the new population decreased 11% . the town now had 32people less than it did before the 1200 increase. Find the original population

Answer:

P = original population

N = (P + 1200)  where N is new population

.11 N = decrease of new population

N - .11 N = P - 32      new population minus 11 % decrease

(P + 1200)  - .11 (P + 1200) = P - 32     substitute for N

.89 P + 1068 = P - 32

.11 P = 1100

P = 10,000

Check:

10000  + 1200 = 11,200

.11 * 11200 = 1232

11200 - 1322 = 9968 = 10,000 - 32
