A town's population increased by 1200 people, and then this new population decreased by 11%. Had the town 32 fewer people than it did before the 1200 increase find the original population?
Solution:
Let the population of town = x
therefore , towns new population = x+1200
hence ,
(x+1200) - 11/100(x+1200) = x - 32
x+1200 -0.11x - 132= x - 32
x+1200 -132 - x + 32 = 0.11x
1200 -164 = 11/100x
100 (1200 -164) = 11x
or x = 100/11(1036)
x = 9418.18
or x=9418
Therefore original population of town = 9418.
