2 1/2 township measure = (2 1/2) * 36

2 1/2  = 2 + 1/2

( 2 + 1/2) * 36

Apply Distributive property

2 * 36  + (1/2) * 36

= 72 + 18

= 90

90 square miles  in 2 1/2 townships
