A toy car of mass 20kg rests on a horizontal surface. A massless string tied to the trolley passes over a frictionless pulley and a load of 5kg is suspended from the end of string. If coefficient of kinetic friction between toy car and surface
be 0.1, find the acceleration of toy car and tension in the
string. (Take g=10 ms-2)

Answer:

As the string is inextensible, and the pulley is smooth, therefore both the 4 kg block and the 20 kg trolley have the same acceleration a.

Let T be tension in the string.

The equation of motion of the block is

40−T=4a                      ..........(i)

The equation of motion of the trolley is

T - fk=20a$$

fk=μN

Here, μk=0.02,N=20×10=200N

∴T−0.02×200=20a orT−4=20a           ....=1.5ms−2
