Given that, a train is 500 m long and crosses a bridge of 1000 m in 10 seconds.

We have to find the average speed of the train.

Average speed is defined as the ratio of total distance covered with respect to total time taken.

Now, distance covered by train is equal to sum of it's own length and length of bridge. i.e

Total distance covered by train = Length of train + Length of bridge

= (500 + 1000)m

= 1500 m

Total time taken by train = 10 seconds

Average speed = (Total distance covered)/(Total time taken)

Substitute the known values in the above formula,

Average speed = 1500/10

Average speed = 150

Therefore, the average speed of the train is 150 m/s.

Additional Information:

Average speed = (Total distance covered)/(Total time taken)

Average velocity = (Total Displacement)/(Total time taken)

S.I. unit of both average speed and average velocity is m/s.

Conditions where Displacement is zero:

  • If initial and final points are same.
  • If body don't move from it's actual position means no distance covered by body.

Given :

  • Length of train = 500m
  • Length of bridge = 1000m

To Find :

  • Average speed of train when it crosses the bridge

Solution :

Finding total distance

→ Total distance = 500m + 1000m = 1500m

→ Time taken = 10s

Speed = Distance/time = 1500/10 = 150m/s

___________________________

Now , finding average speed

Average speed = Total distance travelled/total time taken

Where

  • Total Distance = 1500m
  • Total time taken = 10s

→ Average speed = 1500/10

→ Average speed = 150m/s

That means average speed = normal speed

.°. Hence, average speed = 150m/s
