Let the total distance be 2x .

Time taken to cover first half = x/40 hours

Time taken to cover second half= x/60 hours

Average speed = Total distance/Total time

= 2x/ (x/40 + x/60)

= 2x / (5x/120)

= 240 / 5 = 48 km/h

Answer:

Let the total distance be 2x .

Time taken to cover first half = x/40 hours

Time taken to cover second half= x/60 hours

Average speed = Total distance/Total time

= 2x/ (x/40 + x/60)

= 2x / (5x/120)

= 240 / 5 = 48 km/h
