there is very less friction between wheel and rail and the parallel rail simply guide the train in longitudinal direction no lateral movement so a the power is mostly concentrated in one direction, so for a given power and given tonnage a train is faster than road vehicle

train has a right of way it will always be prefered once a line clear has been given for a block section (its a track section between 2 adjacent stations) it will not stop in that section an all the gates will be closed and the train will negotiate the section like a boss

road are constructed according to the contour of the existing geography while rails have much shoter alignment with embankments cutting tunnels and bridges so for 2 given cities say Mumbai to bangalore road distance will be greater than track distance, hence the train reaches home faster
