A train is travelling at a speed of 65km/hr from Mumbai to Patna. On its return journey it travels at a speed of 60km/hr and takes 5 hours more than the onward journey. What is the distance between Mumbai and Patna?

let time taken from mumbai to patna = x hours

speed from mumbai to patna = 65 kmph

distance = speed x time

distance = 65 * x = 65x km ----------(1)

time taken from patna to mumbai = x+5 hours

speed from patna to mumbai = 60 kmph

distance = speed x time

distance = 60 * (x+5) = 60(x+5) km ----------(2)

equating both the equations

65x = 60(x+5)

65x = 60x + 300

65x - 60x = 300

5x = 300

x = 60

we have our time = 60 hours

and speed = 65 kmph

distance = speed x time

= 60 x 65 = 3900 km is the distance
