Given : A train of mass 1000 ton is moving with an acceleration of 0.5 m/s² and the resistance to the motion is 200 N per ton.

the last bogie of 200 ton is suddenly detached from the train,

To Find the new acceleration of the train

Solution:

m = 1000 ton  =  1000 * 1000 kg

resistance to the motion is 200 N per ton.

resistance to the motion  = 200 * 1000  = 200000 N

a = 0.5 m/s²

Applied Force  =  ma  +   resistance to the motion

=> Applied  Force =  1000000 * 0.5  + 200000

=>Applied  Force  = 500000    + 200000

=> Applied  Force  =  700000  N

last bogie of 200 ton is removed

Hence  resistance to the motion  = 200 * (1000 - 200)  = 160000 N

Net Force =  700000 -  160000  = 540000N

Net mass = 1000 - 200 = 800 ton = 800000  kg

Net acceleration =  540000 /  800000

= 0.675 m/s²

new acceleration of the train  = 0.675 m/s²
