a train after covering 2/7 part of its distance reduced its speed by 21.66 % so the train reached in its destination late by 65 minutes.

To find : the present time taken by train to cover the complete distance.

solution : let total distance is x , speed = v and time taken = t

so, x/v = t .....(1)

2/7 part of distance covered by train with speed v and 5/7 part of distance covered by train with speed v - 21.66% of v = 0.7834v

so, 2x/7v + (5x/7)/(0.7834v) = t + 65/60

⇒2/7 t + (5/7 × 0.7834) t = t + 65/60 [ from equation (1) ]

⇒0.29t + 0.91t = t + 1.083

⇒t = 5.415 hrs = 5 hrs + 0.415 × 60 min ≈ 5 hrs 25 minutes

Therefore the present time taken by the train to cover the complete distance = 5 hrs 25 minutes
