The speed of the train is 32 km/hr.

Given,

A train travels 288 km at a uniform speed if the speed had been 4 km per hour more it would have than 1 hour less for the same journey.

To Find,

The speed of the train.

Solution,

Let us assume that the speed of the train is x km/hr.

Time taken to cover 288 km = 288/x hr.

Time taken to cover 288 km when trains travels 4 km/hr faster = 288/(x+4) hr.

Now, according to the question

288/x-288/(x+4) = 1

288(x+4-x)/x(x+4) = 1

288(4) = x(x+4)

1152 = x²+4x

x²+4x-1152 = 0

x = 32,-36, -36 will be rejected as speed can't be negative.

Hence, the speed of the train is 32 km/hr.
