Step-by-step explanation:

Given

A train travels a certain journey and is supposed to arrive at midday.when it's average speed is 40 km/h it arrives at 1 pm . When its average speed is 48 km/hr it arrives at 11 am. What is the length of the journey.

Let d be the length of journey in km / h

Let t be time of journey going at 40 km/h

Let t – 2 be time of journey at 48 km/h. It is 2 hrs less.

Equation for first journey at 40 km/h

So d = 40 t

Equation for second journey at 48 km/h

So d = 48 (t – 2)

Solving for t we get

48(t – 2) = 40 t

48 t – 96 = 40 t

48 – 40 t = 96

8 t = 96

So t = 96 / 8

So t = 12

Now we need to find the distance

So d = 40 t

Now d = 40 (12)

So d = 480 km

Therefore the total length of the journey is 480 km.
