Concept

Speed is a scalar quantity which means no direction only magnitude whereas velocity is a vector quantity which means both magnitude and direction.

Speed = Distance / Time

Velocity = Displacement / Time

Given

A train travels a distance of 100 m due east in 10 seconds.

Find

Speed and Velocity

Solution

As given in the question the train is moving in a single direction, So

Distance = Displacement

Hence

Magnitude of speed = Magnitude of velocity

Speed  = 100 / 10

Speed = 10 m/s

Similarly elocity  = 10 m/s due east

The Speed of train is 10 m/s and velocity is 10 m/s due east.
