Answer:

distance travelled by train=480km

let the speed of the train be x km/hr

time taken by the train to cover distance of 480 km be y hr

according to the condition

in 1st case:-

speed=x km/hr

distance=480

t1=?

in 2nd case:-

speed=x-8 km/hr

t2=?

since:-

T2-T1=3 {TIME IN 2ND CASE -TIME IN 1ST CASE}

SPEED=DISTANCE/TIME

TIME=DISTANCE/SPEED

T2=480/X-8

T1=480/X

WHEN U WILL SOLVE T2-T1

U WILL GET THE QUADRATIC EQN AS  X²-8X-1280=0

X²-40X+32X-1280

X(X-40)+32(X-40)

(X-40)(X+32)

X-40=0

X=40KM/HR

AND WE ARE NOT CONSIDIRING X+32 CASE AS IT WILL RESULTIN -32AND SPEED CANNOT BE -VE.
