Answer: 40km per hour

Step-by-step explanation

Let the uniform speed be x km per hour

Distance = 480km

If speed was 8km per hour less

Speed = (x-8) km per hour

Distance = 480km

According to Question,

480  -  480 = 3  (∵ distance/speed=time)

x-8         x

480x-480(x-8) = 3

   x(x-8)

480x-480x+3840 = 3

       x²-8x

3840=3x²-24x

3x²-24x-3840=0

On dividing throughout by 3

x²-8x-1280=0

x²+32x-40x-1280=0

x(x+32)-40(x+32)=0

(x+32)(x-40)=0

On comparing both expressions with 0

x=-32 or x=40

∵ Speed cannot be negative x=-32 is rejected.

∴ Speed of train is 40km per hour
