A train travels at 60 km/h for 0.52
hour, 30 km/h for next 0.24 hours
and then 70 km/h for the next 0.71
hour, what is the average

Solution:

Firstly finding the total distance by the train

Using

Distance = speed × distance

Now ,

Distance at speed of 60km/h & time is 0.52hrs = 60 × 0.52 = 31.2 km

Assuming as d1

Distance at speed of 30km/h & time is 0.24hrs = 30 × 0.24 = 7.2 km

Assuming as d2

Distance at speed of 70km/h for the next 0.74 hrs = 70 × 0.71 = 49.7

Assuming as d3

Now ,

Total distance = d1 + d2 + d3

Total distance = 31.2 + 7.2 + 49.7

Total distance = 88.1km

Next , finding total time

Total time = 0.52 + 0.24 + 0.71 = 1.47 hrs

Now , finding average speed

Average speed = total distance/total time

Avg speed = 88.1/1.47

Average speed = 59.93 km/h

Hence , average speed of train = 59.93 km/h
