Given

  • \text{Speed of train station X to station Y is 40km/h }
  • \text{Returns with a speed of 50km/h }

To Find

  • Average Speed

Solution

Let Distance be D

and time be T

 \sf{Time_1 = \dfrac{Distance}{Speed} }

 \sf{Time_1 = \dfrac{D }{40} } \\  \\  \\

 \sf{Time_2 = \dfrac{Distance}{Speed} }

 \sf{Time_2 = \dfrac{D}{50} }

We know that

\sf{Average \:  \:  Speed= \dfrac{D  +D }{ \dfrac{D}{40}  +\dfrac{D}{50} }}

\sf{Average \:  \:  Speed= \dfrac{2D }{ \dfrac{5D + 4D}{200}  }}

\sf{Average \:  \:  Speed= \dfrac{2D }{  9D} \times 200}

\sf{Average \:  \:  Speed= \dfrac{400 }{  9} }

\sf{Average \:  \:  Speed= 44 km/h}
