When a tall plant is crossed with a short plant, the F1 generation plants are all tall. The tall trait was dominant. But when the F1 generation plants are crossed, the F2 generation does not have all tall plants. There are tall as well as short plants present. Thus this shows that the F1 plants had inherited the short trait but it was not expressed since tall trait was dominant. Hence the short trait was transferred to the second generation as F2 generation plants had short plants present.
