A trait might be inherited but not expressed in the case of plant having both dominant and recessive allele where the recessive gene would be inherited but not expressed.
eg. Mendel first crossed 2 pure tall and dwarf plants by cross pollination and got all tall plants .Then he self pollinated a hybrid and got tall and dwarf plants in 3:1 ratio. this means that the dwarf allele was inherited but not expressed.
