A transformer without power loss carries 4000 turns in the primary and 2000 turns in the

secondary.

If the primary voltage is 120V and the current is 0.2A.

a)What is the output voltage of transformer?

b)What is the current in the secondary?

c)What is the maximum output power?

d)Where are the thick wires to be used in this transformer? Why?

A transformer takes high-voltage electricity with a small current and changes it into low-voltage electricity with a large current, or vice versa. That is, step up or step down the voltage in a circuit. A step-up transformer turns low-voltage electricity into high-voltage electricity while dropping the current. A step-down transformer changes high-voltage electricity into low-voltage electricity.

If we change the number of turns in the coils we change the induced emf. This allows us to change (transform) the voltage from the primary to the secondary coil.

The Turns Rule is:

Ns/Np=Vs/Vp

Where,

Ns = number of turns on the secondary coil

Np = number of turns on the primary coil

Vs = voltage across the secondary coil

Vp = voltage across the primary coil

So if number of turns on the secondary coil is more than on the primary coil, the output voltage will be higher than the input voltage. This is called a step up transformer.

Hence, The number of turns of the primary coil as per the given question can be obtained as follows:

Let input voltage be 220V and the output voltage be 2200V. Let 2000 be the number of turns of secondary coil and x be the number of turns of primary coil.

Ns/Np=Vs/Vp;

That is, 2000/x=2200/220

x=

2200

2000×220

=200turns.

Therefore, the number of turns of primary coil is 200 turns.

Explanation:

a) The ratio of input windings to output windings will determine the output of the transformer. ... This will give you the output voltage. For example, a voltage source that sends 240 volts through a transformer with 500 primary windings and 100 secondary windings would have an output voltage of 240 * (100/500) = 48 volts.

b) The current in the secondary is the current in the primary (assuming a single turn primary) divided by the number of turns of the secondary. In the illustration on the right, 'I' is the current in the primary, 'B' is the magnetic field, 'N' is the number of turns on the secondary, and 'A' is an AC ammeter.

c) The maximum output power = the maximum output current × the rated output voltage so there is no problem if it is confirmed that one of them is not exceeded.

d) If the output voltage is smaller than the input voltage, then output current can be larger than the input current.. such a transformer is called a step down . The larger current needs thicker wire ,in order to reduce energy loss due to resistance. ... How does the gauge of wire used in a transformer affect its performance?
