A tree breaks due to strom and broken part bends so that the top of the tree touches the ground by making an angle 45° with the ground. The distance between the foot of the tree and the top of the tree on the ground is 8m. Find the height of the tree before falling down.

Answer:

  • Consider tree to be perpendicular to the ground
  • After breaking tree makes a right angled triangle ABC
  • Base of the tree BC is 8m given
  • Tree touches the ground by making 45 °
  • tan 45 = opposite side / adjacent side
  • Opposite side AB = tan45 * adjacent side

                                        = 1* 8

                                       = 8 m

  • According to pythogorous theorem  AC^2 = AB^2+BC^2

                                                                                  = 8^2 + 8^2

                                                                                = 64 + 64

                                                                           AC = 8\sqrt{2}

  • Height of the tree before falling                = AB + AC

                                                                              = 8 + 8\sqrt{2}

                                                                              =8 (1+\sqrt{2}) m
