Correct Question :

A tree is broken at a height of 1.5m from the ground and it’s top touches the ground at a distance 3.6 m from its base . What was the total height of the tree before it broke?

Solution :

*Refer the attachment for figure.

• Let BCD be the total height of tree (AC = DC)

AB = 3.6 m (base) and BC = 1.5 m

In \triangleABC

By Pythagoras Theorem

=> (H)² = (B)² + (P)²

=> AC² = AB² + BC²

=> AC² = (3.6)² + (1.5)²

=> AC² = 12.96 + 2.25

=> AC² = 15.21

=> AC = 3.9 m

Now,

Total height of tree = BC + CD

=> 1.5 + 3.9 (As both AC and CD are equal)

=> 5.4 m

_____________________________

5.4 m was the total height of the tree before it broke.
