To Find: the original height of the tree.
Solution:
the original height of the tree = h m
tree is broken at a height of 35m
Hence length of broken part of tree = h - 35 m
touches the ground at a distance 12m
Pythagoras' theorem: square on the hypotenuse of a right-angled triangle is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two perpendicular sides.
(h - 35)² = 35² + 12²
=> (h - 35)² = 37²
=> h - 35 = ± 37
=> h = 72 , - 2
Height of tree can not be negative ,
so h = 72
Hence the original height of the tree = 72 m
