Qstn. A tree is broken at a height of 9m above the ground and its top touches the ground at a distance of 12m from its foot, find the total height of the tree.

Sol. We have to visualize the figure in our mind(a right angled triangle)

Using Pythagoras theorem,

(hypotenuse)²= (altitude)²+(base)²

(hyp)²=9²+12²

         =81+144

(hyp)²  =225

hyp=√225

     =15m

Therefore, broken part height= 15m

Height of tree= 9m+15m

                       = 24m
