A tree is broken at a height of 5 m from the ground and its body touches the ground at a distance of 12 m from the base of the tree. Find the original height of the tree.

Given:-

  • A tree is broken at a height of 5 m from the ground.
  • Its top reaches the ground at a distance of 12 m from the base of the tree.

To Find:-

The original height of the tree.

Solution:-

Let AB be the tree of height (x + 5) m before it broke at point C.

Let the top A touch the tree after it broke.

Then, ∆DBC is a right angle.

Referring to the figure,

CD² = DB + BC²

⇒ x² = (12² + 5²)

⇒ x = (144 + 25)

⇒ x² = 159

⇒ x² = (13)²

⇒ x = 13

Original height of the tree = (x + 5) m = (13 + 5) m = 18 m

∴ The original height of the tree = 18 m
