The original height of the tree is 18 m.

Detailed answer :

We can solve this problem by a number of ways, but here we're going to use Pythagoras theorem for the same purpose.

Now, according to the question tree is broken so it will form a right angle triangle.

Height of the broken tree is 5m which is the height ( let it be 'P' ) of the triangle formed

& also, it touches ground at 12 m from base which is serving as the length of base ( 'B' ).

∴ By using Pythagoras theorem we can find the length of the broken part ( hypotenuse 'H' ) & then add them up for the total height of the tree.

by Pythagoras theorem -

H² = P² + B²

or, H = √(P² + B²)

here P = 5m, B = 12m

putting it in the equation ---

∴ H = √(5² + 12²) m

or, H = √(25 + 144) m

or, H = √169 m

So, H = 13 m

Now the height of the tree will be =

( length of broken part + given height of the tree ) = 13 + 5 = 18m.

We can also solve this problem by trigonometry.
