Given : A tree of height 20m breaks at a point 5 m high from the foot of the tree touching the ground at a point,

To Find : the distance between the foot of the tree and top of the tree is

Solution:

the foot of the tree touching the ground at a point,

Hence foot of the tree and top of the tree  both are at ground

Height of tree after break =  5 m

Length of broken part of tree = 20 - 5 = 15 m

Applying Pythagorean theorem

distance between the foot of the tree and top of the tree is

= √15² - 5²

= 5√3² - 1

= 5√9 - 1

= 5√8

= 10√2 m

=  14.14  m

distance between the foot of the tree and top of the tree is  10√2 m

≈ 14.14  m
