A Triumph of Surgery Summary Mr. Pumphrey was a rich and emotional lady who has a cute pet. It was a small dog. She named it.Tricki. She loved him so much that she usually overfed him. Tricki had put on a lot of weight which made him slow and pathetic. When doctor James Herriot saw the fat dog like a bloated sausage, he was very shocked. He made a plan and told Mrs. Pumphrey that Tricki needed treatment for a disease which was possible only in hospital. Hi, I am also in class 10 ... best of luck for your boards ... hope it helped you.

Q1.

(a)  Why were there tears in Mrs. Pumphrey’s eyes?

Mrs. Pumphrey was startled when Tricki hopped into her lap and started licking her. Noticing the changes in Tricki, she got emotional. Tears of happiness were shining in her eyes and she thanked Mr. Herriot saying that it was the triumph of surgery.

(b) What does this tell you about her?

Pumphrey loved her dog Tricki very much. Her love for the dog overfed him. She would offer him a little extra between the meals to build his strength, however, she did not know that that would be the cause of Tricki's illness. Thus, because of her love, she over pampered the dog and overfed him

(c)  What does the phrase ‘a triumph of surgery’ refers to?

Mrs. Pumphrey thinks that Tricki's recovery is a triumph of surgery because his illness was very serious. She was of the opinion that there were very few chances of Tricki to improve and he needed immediate medical attention.
