A truck and a car of masses m1 and m2 respectively are moving with equal kinetic energies. Equal stopping forces are applied and they come to a halt after travelling
further distance X1, and X2 respectively, then

a) X1 = X2

b)X1/X2=m1/m2

c)X1/X2=√m1/m2

d)X1/X2=√m2/m1

The correct answer is an option (a) X1 = X2

GIVEN

Mass of the truck = m1

Mass of the car = m2

the kinetic energy of the truck = kinetic energy of the car.

Stopping force on the truck = Stopping force on the car.

TO FIND

Relationship between the distances of the truck and car before they stop.

SOLUTION

We can simply solve the above problem as follows-

Since it is given that,

It is given,

Distance covered by the truck = x1

Distance covered by the car = x2

We know that,

Work done = Force × distance.

Since equal stopping forces are applied on both truck and car

Let the work done on the truck be, W1

Work done on the car be, W2

So,

W1 = W2

Force × X1 = Force × X2

Therefore,

X1 = X2.

Hence, Option (a) is correct.
