A truck is moving on a straight road with uniform acceleration. The following
table gives the speed of the truck at various instants of time.
Speed (m/s) 5 10 15 20 25 30
Time (s) 0 10 20 30 40 50
Draw the speed-time graph by choosing a convenient scale. Determine from it :
(i) the acceleration of truck
(ii) the distance travelled by the truck in 50 seconds.

(1) Acceleration of the truck = 0.5 m s⁻²

(2) Distance traveled in 50 sec = 875 m

Explanation:

  • Acceleration of any body is defined as rate of change of velocity of the body. In given question the graph is straight line started from 5 m s⁻¹ as the motion is uniform accelerated and we can also calculate acceleration  from the slope of graph
  • Distance traveled by the given body during whole journey can be calculated from the area under given graph and we can also calculate it by using equation of motion

Given,

Speed = 5 10 15 20 25 30

Time    = 0 10 20 30 40 50

=> Acceleration = \frac{change in velocity}{time taken}

=> Acceleration = \frac{final velocity- initial velocity}{total time taken}

=> Acceleration = \frac{30- 5}{50-0}

=> Acceleration = \frac{25}{50}

=> Acceleration = 0.5 m s⁻²

Distance can be calculated by equation of motion

=>  s = ut+\frac{1}{2}at^{2}

Given, t =50 sec

a = 0.5 m s⁻²

u = 5 m s⁻¹

=> s = 5*50+\frac{1}{2}0.5(50)^{2}

=> s = 250 + 625

=> s = 875 m
