A truck travelling due north at 20 m/s turns west and travels at the same speed. What is the change in velocity?

Let the velocity vectors be v1 = 20 m/s due North and v2 = 20 m/s due East.

Change in velocity = v2 - v1

|v2­ - v1| = √{v12 + (-v2)2} = √{202 + 202} = 20√2 m/s

Now v2­ - v1 = 20√2 m/s due to south west
