- Alum (Aluminium sulphate) when added to raw water reacts with a bicarbonate alkalinities present in water and forms a gelatinous precipitate. This flow attracts other fine particles and suspended material in raw water and settles down.
- Simply, impurities are needed for conducting electricity. Impurities are reduced by adding alum to water, which makes water a poor conductor.
