A turbine develops 500 kw power under a head of 100 m at 200 rpm. What would be its normal speed under a head of 81 m?

  • Given P1 = 500 KW
  • H1 = 100 m
  • H2 = 81 m
  • N1 = 200 rpm
  • N2 = ?
  • So h ∝ N^2
  • H1 / N1^2 = H2 / N2^2
  • So N2^2 = N1^2 x H2 / H1
  •               = 200 ^2 x 81 / 100
  •              = 400 x 81
  • So N2 = √400 x 81
  •           = 20 x 9
  •          = 180 rpm

Therefore N2 = 180 rpm
