Meeting Corporal Turnbull was a turning point in the professor’s life. The professor did not know his flaw until he met his match in the Corporal. Undoubtedly he was a promising trainee at the army training depot. However, he had a serious flaw in his personality. He was a show off. He would learn details about certain things that were being taught during the training, and boast off his knowledge during the training session. For example, during the musketry training, he interrupted the trainer and corrected him about the exact speed of the bullet when it was fired. He interrupted his instructors quite frequently. . When the Professor tried to correct Corporal Turnbull while he was giving a training lecture on hand grenades, the latter got offended. He invited the Professor to give the lecture in his stead. After the session he made a declaration. He told the platoon that he was assigning the permanent cook-house duties to the Professor.
We learnt from the chapter that we must always be humble in life. We must not be arrogant to our elders, especially our colleagues, teachers and seniors. We must also be decent, polite, courteous, and decorous. These are great traits of a gentleman. If Private Quelch had these values in him, he would have been a brilliant achiever.
