The orignal number is 54.

GIVEN

A two-digit number is such that if the digit 4 is placed to its right, its value would increase by 490.

TO FIND

The orignal number.

SOLUTION

We can simply solve the above problem as follows;

Let the digit at tens place = x

The Digit at ones place = y

Two-digit number thus formed = 10x + y

When 4 is added to the number. The number becomes a 3-digit number.

Therefore,

Number after adding 4.

100x + 10y + 4 = 10x + y + 490

Adding the like terms.

100x-10x + 10y-y = 490-4

90x + 9y = 486

Diving the whole equation by 9

10x + y = 54.

Hence, The orignal number is 54.
