A U-tube contains water and oil separated by mercury.
mercury columns in the two arms are at the same level
with 10 cm of water in one arm and 12.5 cm of oil in the other
s shown in figure. What is the relative density of oil ?

(b) 1.0
(a) 0.8

Answer:

Calculate yourself, you ll learn

Explanation:

Since the whole system is at rest, net force acting on the whole U liquid column is zero.

Consider any liquid column of any length and use NLM to equate net force zero. The forces include mass of the liquid column considered,force developed due to pressure difference b/w the ends of considered column.

Hint:it will be easier to solve if you consider a U tube column of equal side lengths.Here, the weight is balanced by Normal due to tube so only to equate pressure at certain level in both sides of tube.

I am not giving you solution so that you do yourself and learn.

Answer:

Since water & oil are at same level

hence

q1gh1=q2gh2

q1/q2=h2/h1

1.25
