Given - Uranium-238 nucleus emits α-particle with speed of 1.4 x 10⁷ m/s.

Let v₂ be the speed of residual nucleus thorium-234

Therefore,

m₁v₁=m₂v₂

4 x 1.4 x 10⁷ = 234 x v₂

v₂ = (4 x 1.4 x 10⁷) / 234

v₂ = 2.4 x 10⁵ m/s
